With the school-year now underway and all of the different demands of school, family, friends, sports, jobs, etc., it’s great to remember the wonderful article called “Angels” found on page 306 of Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896 by Mary Baker Eddy.
Right in the middle of all of the demands or perhaps confusion in our lives, we can remember that God’s angel messages can reach us right where we are and cut through all of the noise.
“When angels visit us, we do not hear the rustle of wings, nor feel the feathery touch of the breast of a dove; but we know their presence by the love they create in our hearts. Oh, may you feel this touch, — it is not the clasping of hands, nor a loved person present; it is more than this: it is a spiritual idea that lights your path!”
So, right in the middle of all of the demands, we can pause and wait, kick out all of the thoughts and feelings that do not come from God. Mrs. Eddy continues:
“God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies. Never ask for tomorrow: it is enough that divine Love is an ever-present help; and if you wait, never doubting, you will have all you need every moment. What a glorious inheritance is given to us through the understanding of omnipresent Love! More we cannot ask: more we do not want: more we cannot have. This sweet assurance is the ‘Peace, be still’ to all human fears, to suffering of every sort.”
I love the point that Mrs. Eddy makes, that God gives us His spiritual ideas and that if we wait, never doubting, we will have all we need every moment. I like the idea of waiting – waiting doesn’t mean just sitting around and hoping that good will show up, but waiting means actively expecting good. When we are waiting for the bus, we go to the bus stop. If the bus isn’t there, this is okay because we understand that one will come along. If we doubt, we might start walking or perhaps stand at the wrong corner, but we understand that there is a schedule and a bus stop and that good is already here now and so we stay put.
The same thing is true with God. God is good and God more than fills all space – God is All-in-all! There isn’t room for anything else but God. Therefore the only place where good comes from is God. Does God worry? Does God fear? No, so God would not send those type of thoughts or feelings to you to get you to do the right thing. God is the all-knowing Mind, and God is the all embracing Love that loves unconditionally.
Love would not make us guess, but tells each one of us what the next right thing to do is. Love helps us with our homework, picking out the classes we need to take; Love has a right balance between family and friends; Love helps us do our best in sports. Love always employs each one of Love’s ideas to be the best reflection of the synonyms for God and to be in the best place to do this. Love just takes care of all of the details. Fear has nothing to do with our identity or our thoughts and feelings, and so they can be dismissed.
I love the reminder from Proverbs 3: 5, 6 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths.” So we can let God be God today and everyday and listen for these angel messages. They are speaking to us every single moment!
