Metaphysical Activity Period
Or MAP for short!
MAP is the first activity period of the day during camp programs where the whole camp comes together to actively explore a concept or idea in Christian Science - this could be a Bible Story, a quality, a theme, or a specific passage from the Bible, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, or any of Mrs. Eddy's published works.
MAP is fun, engaging, and involves components such as art, music, dance, games, conversations/discussions, and more!
We love MAP, and we'd love to share some ideas for you to do MAP at home or in Sunday School.
- In large group, read the Camp Metaphysical Theme – Romans 12:21 “Be not overcome of evil but overcome evil with good.
- Have someone read the definition of GOOD from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy
- Point out that Mrs. Eddy defines good as ALL. Gen. 1:31 – God saw all that he had made and behold it was very good.
- Now this can be a difficult idea to understand – In Christian Science we’re taught that God, Good, is all but sometimes it seems that evil is real too. So today we are going to explore the theme of ‘overcoming evil with good’ to see if we can learn more about what it means to understand God, Good, as all, and to remember times in our own lives when this has been demonstrated.
- Hand out numbered qualities to each pair
- Hold paper to your head and everyone tries to find their match.
- Once you have your partner/group, look at the prompts on the back of the paper
- Play 'Heads Up' - Find partner with matching terms
- Break into BIGGER groups
- Give clipboard, paper, and pen to each group
- Give list of readings to staff member in each group
- Identify and write down some qualities of good and some evil terms from the readings:
BIBLE –
James 3:16-17
II Peter 1:1-2, 5-7
Proverbs 15:29
Proverbs 16:19
Proverbs 10:12
Science and Health –
277:7-12 (Good)
450:19-22
78:28
115:19-3
4. Whole group creates skit/song/poem/collect nature items inspired by the readings and discussion based on our metaphysical theme. (15 minutes)
5. Bring all groups together again. Share some of the terms each group wrote down and inspiration from the readings.
6.Bring everyone back into big group for debrief. Go around the circle and share one new idea that you will take with you from this exercise.
Freedom
God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from a boundless basis.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 258:13–15)
- What is the FIRST thing that comes to mind when you think about "freedom"? [large group]
- What are some synonyms or words that mean the same thing as "freedom"?
- Can anyone name some ideas, stories, or concepts in the Bible that relate to "freedom"?
- How about favourite hymns?
- Does anyone feel comfortable sharing a healing that they've had that relates to "freedom"?
- Encanto reference: pressure - heaviness, unease/unrest, physical challenge
- GAME TIME:
- Tag with a twist:
Mortal Mind Tag - specific limitations - only one hand, can't run, blindfolded, etc.
THEN normal tag - What's the difference?
Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries: “Follow me! Escape from the bondage of sickness, sin, and death!” Jesus marked out the way. Citizens of the world, accept the “glorious liberty of the children of God,” and be free! This is your divine right. The illusion of material sense, not divine law, has bound you, entangled your free limbs, crippled your capacities, enfeebled your body, and defaced the tablet of your being.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 227:21)
- Look at a few Bible stories in small groups : woman with an infirmity 18yrs (Luke 13:11) ; Peter in prison (Acts 12); Man with mental illness (Luke 8:26)
- For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
(Romans 8:2)
- New Jerusalem - free FROM [Rev 21 + 22] vs. 'free TO'
- Sign Hymn 136 to close
I love Thy way of freedom, Lord, / To serve Thee is my choice, / In Thy clear light of Truth I rise / And, listening for Thy voice, / I hear Thy promise old and new, / That bids all fear to cease: / My presence still shall go with thee / And I will give thee peace.
Though storm or discord cross my path / Thy power is still my stay, / Though human will and woe would check / My upward-soaring way; / All unafraid I wait, the while / Thy angels bring release, / For still Thy presence is with me, / And Thou dost give me peace.
I climb, with joy, the heights of Mind, / To soar o'er time and space; / I yet shall know as I am known / And see Thee face to face. / Till time and space and fear are naught / My quest shall never cease, / Thy presence ever goes with me / And Thou dost give me peace.
(Christian Science Hymnal, No. 136:1–3)
